Implementation of switchgrass as feedstock for a industrial biofuels process in a nuclear complex

چکیده

The use of switchgrass (panicum virgatum) as the feedstock for a biofuels complex requires a procedure that coordinates harvesting, drying, storage, and densification techniques with the perpetual availability of process heat from a nuclear reactor and gas from a hydrogen facility. Preparation of feedstock involves assuring a 20% moisture content and compacting the biomass into pellets that can be easily implemented in a 3500 ton-per-day complex. Among the issues that must be considered for on-site switchgrass pro duction are economic viability and logistic feasibility, as well as the introduction of CO2 emissions from transportation that cannot be sequestered.

Agave proves to be a low recalcitrant lignocellulosic feedstock for biofuels production on semi-arid lands

BACKGROUND Agave, which is well known for tequila and other liquor production in Mexico, has recently gained attention because of its attractive potential to launch sustainable bioenergy feedstock solutions for semi-arid and arid lands. It was previously found that agave cell walls contain low lignin and relatively diverse non-cellulosic polysaccharides, suggesting unique recalcitrant features ...

Consolidated bioprocessing of transgenic switchgrass by an engineered and evolved Clostridium thermocellum strain

BACKGROUND Switchgrass is an abundant and dedicated bioenergy feedstock, however its inherent recalcitrance is one of the economic hurdles for producing biofuels. The downregulation of the caffeic acid O-methyl transferase (COMT) gene in the lignin pathway of switchgrass reduced lignin content and S/G ratio, and the transgenic lines showed improved fermentation yield with Saccharomyces cerevisi...

Biological lignocellulose solubilization: comparative evaluation of biocatalysts and enhancement via cotreatment

BACKGROUND Feedstock recalcitrance is the most important barrier impeding cost-effective production of cellulosic biofuels. Pioneer commercial cellulosic ethanol facilities employ thermochemical pretreatment and addition of fungal cellulase, reflecting the main research emphasis in the field. However, it has been suggested that it may be possible to process cellulosic biomass without thermochem...

The effect of switchgrass loadings on feedstock solubilization and biofuel production by Clostridium thermocellum

Background Efficient deconstruction and bioconversion of solids at high mass loadings is necessary to produce industrially relevant titers of biofuels from lignocellulosic biomass. To date, only a few studies have investigated the effect of solids loadings on microorganisms of interest for consolidated bioprocessing. Here, the effects that various switchgrass loadings have on Clostridium thermo...

Advances in biotechnology and genomics of switchgrass

Switchgrass (Panicum virgatum L.) is a C4 perennial warm season grass indigenous to the North American tallgrass prairie. A number of its natural and agronomic traits, including adaptation to a wide geographical distribution, low nutrient requirements and production costs, high water use efficiency, high biomass potential, ease of harvesting, and potential for carbon storage, make it an attract...
